Squealing noise. What could it be?

    Hola,

    I have a 1998 Disco 3.9L, recently bought it.

It has a "squealing" noise coming from the front that comes and goes, but here's what I noticed about it.

    1. It comes on when car has warmed up after driving for sometimes 10 minutes or 30 minutes, and especially if I'm no the freeway.

    2. Instantly goes away when I apply the brakes, the comes back when I release brakes.

    3. Comes and goes.

What could it be? Common issue?

Remove the front brake pads, apply anti-squeal (or a smear of silastic) to the back of the pads & refit.

The squeal is caused by pad vibration.

It can happen on any car with disc brakes. Some cars have better anti-squeal methods than others though.

Check your uni joints. If there is a dry one it can certainly squeal at freeway speeds. Best way to check them is to jack up one wheel to unload tension from the joint, and select neutral (chock the ground wheel). You can then fully rotate the shaft without load to check movement in the joints, try greasing them while its like that - but sometimes there can be a blocked hole in the uni so no matter how much you grease it won't help. With the brakes the squeal usually happens when you apply them, not the other way around - applying the brakes will change the load on the driveline.

The squeal is caused by pad vibration.
you can also help prevent it by deglazing the pads and chamfering the leading and trailing edges.

which particular combination will work best for your vehicle is one of those trial and error things.

please make sure you flood down the brakes and calipers with soapy water and get the loose brake dust away before you start working once the wheel is off.

wet concrete is your friend for deglaing and grinding the chamfer

So I've had a mechanic take care of the brakes and grease the uni-joints.

    SQUEAL LIVES ON!

It comes and goes whilst driving mostly over 80km

It has shown itself at lower speeds.

It comes for few seconds, goes, comes back quickly for bit longer, etc

It's a high pitched squeal that's driving my ears nuts and keeping me off the freeways.

    Could it be BELT?

I know it goes completely when I apply the brakes.. then few seconds (or sometimes a minute later) later returns.

Check for a vacuum leak. Maybe at the brake booster.

What did your mechanic say it was?
I assume you did ask him to have a listen before carrying out the work...

The suggestions in the replies to your original question are DIY tips. If you're taking it to a mechanic, you'd be a lot better off with his diagnosis seeing as he has the car right in front of him.

The mechanic didn't have time to drive her on the freeway to hear it.

    NOW..

Today driving it, the squealing was also happening a lot at lower speeds!

This thing is making me go insane!
