Usually down to a bit of backlash in the driveline, usually the transfer case but there's as there's a bit of slack in each of the 3 diffs, this adds up when changing direction and = clunk.
When putting the car in reverse, I get a decent clunk. Other gears its fine.
Automatic by the way.
Any idea why?

Hi Emanuel,
There seem to be plenty of stories on the internet about auto Discovery 1's clunking when changing to reverse. I got my Disco with 133,000 km on the clock and it clunked. I decided to just keep an eye/ear on it as I couldn't find any obvious reason for the noise other than a combination of slight wear in the various components of the drive train. Now approaching 200,000 km and the clunk is no worse. I put it down to the previous owner using it as a tow vehicle. I have read that they sometimes came out of the factory/new with the clunk, but whether this is so I'm not sure!?

mt disco 1 v8 clunked in reverse since new now 310000 kms dont worry about it
My 307,000km old Tdi auto doesn't clunk at all. Even before all the work was done. But an early Rangie I had with a GMH 5.0 litre V8 conversion did. Go figure.![]()

My '94 clunked and I was advised that a spline shaft was worn in the Transfer box. The reason was lack of lubrication and the remedy was to replace the spline and gear. I pulled them out and sure enough there was considerable wear on the spline. The new part was drilled around the shaft to allow oil to get in to the spline. After 94 they came out of the factory modified and should be OK.
You may just confirm that your driveline mounting bolts are indeed tight.
