Ok I just did exactly the same test with my parts car which is same model, both front wheels up auto in nuetral CDL unlocked, I can turn front drive shaft by hand and front wheels turn, CDL locked I cant turn it,

There you go. You proved it yourself. With front raised and being unable to turn driveshaft (i'm not sure why you are using terms backwards and forward) with what we established so far from most likely to less likely: centre diff stuck, cdl mechanism stuck, front diff stuck to the point where you can still drive it but unable to turn driveshaft by hand. Take off front driveshaft and try again. You'll need to take it off anyway if taking xfer case out.Quote:

Lack of oil can lead to something breaking and jamming centre diff, but not directly causing the jam. You can't just add oil and expect it to work. More seroius damage is done by the looks of it.

Yep I think it's toast, I do have a spare which I will put in and I'll do the diff and swivels hubs as well as I have a set of those I rebuilt a while ago,Quote:

But thinking about it here in the shed I'm going to do the test again tomorrow with it in neutral, I didn't quite get why but after thinking about it, when I tried to drive it with TC in neutral it would not go which is right so if I test it in neutral and front tails haft does not spin then it has to be the diff, warning I'm 8 beers in and my mind is working overdrive.... :D
the front shft can only be turned if all the following are true
- The front diff is not damaged or otherwise restricted from turning.
- the Transfer case does not have a damaged differential in it
- the center diff lock is not engaged
- there is no restriction on the input of the transfer case differential.
the easiest way to set up this condition set assuming nothing is broken is
- Jack up the whole front axle and ensure both wheels are free to rotate
- disengage the center differential lock
- select neutral on the transfer case
If you are still unable to rotate the front shaft lift the back axle, check both wheels are free to rotate and release the parkbrake.
if you can now rotate the front shaft and the rear axle rotates at the same time in the same direction then either the CDL is stuck on but if you have any grinding noises its most likely to be a damaged diff or siezed bearing.
if the shafts rotate in opposite directions then you have a problem with the tcase gear set. and the center diff is working but you are getting driveline wind up from the tcase itself.
Ok I did it to the letter as described above and with front up could not turn front shaft, with back raised also turning ftont shaft all wheels rotated in same direction could not hear any nises at all though to indicate diff damage front ot rear but the TC did sound a bit rattlely but wasnt dad, didnt feel no grinding at all but when I fully rotated it got to a spot were there was a very slight bit of resistance but it would have been about 2 deg befire it went away very slight.

OK so i have determined that i need to replace the TC, ill pull the one out of my parts car and use that, i have ordered a complete gasket kit, front and rear seals, is there anything else i need to get that i could change myself,
while i have it apart i plan to replace the complete front swivel hub assembly each side with a set i had rebuilt on the bench a while ago that have new seals and CV's , with the diff centre is there anything i could replace that would not be to big a job seeing as i am a novice at this
