Thread: What Is This Light?

I had a problem today with my 96 300 tdi. Turned the key to ignition and the car was dead. There was no lights on the dash as if the battery was totally dead. It would not crank over.

The battery was ok, high beam and horn worked. My first thoughts after checking the main fuse was a faulty ignition switch. So I took my D2 for this trip.

A few hours later I went to have a look. Turned on the key and all the dash lights came on. However there was a light that I have never seen before.

My handbook(see pic below) shows the light in question as a seat belt light.

In my dash this light is a pic of a car. I turned the key off and when I turned it on again the dash was again dead. After about ten seconds the lights came back on again but without the mystery light. It then started ok

Does anyone know what the light in my dash and what might be causing the problem?

Thanks Scott and Discomark. Your two posts have answered two questions.

I now know that this light is for the immobilizer. The link in the above post is, after having a read, tells me it is not the "spider" problem, although the symptoms are similar.

It the spider info, early on it says, if the light is illuminated that it is not the spider but something else.
