    Advice on tyres

Im throwing on some 33s onto my old disco. (33X12.50x15)
Anyway i had planned on going maxxis Bighorn but after talking to the tyre bloke he advised me against them. Saying they were just average tyres?
He recommended i go the Dick Cepek range.
Can i get advice on which are good.
He is asking $280 for the Maxxis Bighorn.
He is asking $350 for the Dick Cepek Mud Country.
He is asking $250 for the Hankook RT03s.

Also as a side note i checked out the Dick Cepek Crusher range and there cool as lol. Cant help but wonder if there just about look and not that practical?

Getting new dynamic rims supplied with -25mill offset to deal with it.

Car has 2 inch suspension lift and about to undergo a camel cut at the least if not more and guard flares.

Any other advice before i throw a chunk of money at this tyre bloke?

Have you looked at Mickey Thompsons?
I had the Baja ATZ's on my D1. (back in the day)
They did the job very well for not a lot of money.
    Long wear life too.
From memory they do about six different mud patterns, from insane competition types down to a more moderate style. (Baja MTZ.)

I am not sure if they are available in 33 inch however I recently purchased some Maxxis Trepadore radials In 31X10.5R15 for $201 fitted and balanced.

They do everything I need off road and are very quiet on road.

What's more in this size they are legal in NSW and with just a 2inch suspension lift, some -25mm rims, a bit of cutting and some flares, all fit neatly.

Gearing is also fine in this size.

    My 2 cents worth.

I have yes but they do appear to be a lot more pricey. Around the $500 each.
I believe the Dick Cepek are made in the same factory they make Mickeys.

Apparently they do sell in 33 inch. Actually quite a nice aggressive looking tyre those.
I think i might go speak to a few more tyre places today and see if i can get them to start a price war on each other

Hankooks, Maxxis and General Grabbers all seem to be good value at the moment.

I thought people who had run Bighorns on this forum had spoken highly of them.

Thats pretty much why i planned to get the Bighorns.
However the tyre bloke told me there only 6 ply versus 10 ply on the more expensive ones and are ultimately not as good.
Thats sort of why i asked here mate.
Cant ever trust a salesman so i assume his advice was sale based and perhaps not correct.
That said he runs a lexus with the same tyres he wants to sell to me so i guess that might be some testimony to there quality?
He did say there made in the same factory as Mickeys which has to be a good thing right?

Ah ok, maybe it's more a comparison between P and LT type tyres than a comment on the Bighorn as such.

It would surprise me if they were made in the same factory as Mickeys, but that said, I have been surprised before! Mickey Thompson (and Dick Cepek) are owned by Cooper Tires in the USA, where Maxxis is Cheng Shin from Taiwan.

Just had a look, just note that the minimum rim width for that tyre is 8.5" if that's of any concern. I think what's tricky about comparing tyres by ply is that plys are all different. I've some sidewalls for example are 2x1500, others are 3x1000,many less, some are nylon, some are Kevlar etc.

But that said, the load rating isn't high on them, and when I looked at the 35x12.5-16 Trepador radial which the local dealer by freak chance had in stock, he also commented that they're a bit thin in the carcass.

Try Nang Kang Mudstars, I have them on mine, the previous set lasted 8 years without a puncture or sidewall damage, they still have enough tread depth to pass rego.
Paid $185 ea. when purchased with 2 other buyers last year, can't fault them, bugger paying around $300 a tyre when these will outlast and outperform these expensive crap, Regards Frank.
