    Turbo and coolant questions

    Question 1:
Pulled out my IC yesterday and cleaned it out and changed all the hoses to silicone ones. when i took it for test drive later, was driving very nice except i noticed when the turbo starts spooling you can hear the nice whistle at about 2k and as the revs get higher it turns to an almost rattling sound. it sounds a little scary. never hear it before like that.

any ideas? i did not touch the turbo made sure i had it plugged up whilst doing the work, everythying went fairly smoothly.

would this noise be the turbo spinning at speeds it didnt in the past because of restrictions? it wasnt overly dirty in there. quite clean. so dont know what difference it should have made.

    Question 2
whilst doing the intercooler i took off top radiator hose to be able to manouvre fan cowling out the way. when i went to top up coolant after i took the radiator bung out, turned on the heater and took off thermostat bung. started filling from expansion tank until radiator leaked. put bung back on. kept filling until (i thought) would come out of the thermostat bung. my discos expansion tank fill level is below the thermostat bung. so by filling the expansion tank until it comes out of thermostat, you are pretty much filling the expansion tank all the way to the top.

obviously this is not right. can anyone tell me otherwise? from the posts ive read, the way i did it seems what everyone else does.

    Fun Story
a girl at work saw scratches all over my hand and asked with a smile, oh do you have a kitten?
i told her no, i have a landrover.
she gave me a weird, confused look and walked away.

you can see pics of the new hoses i put on, on the what did you do today thread.

I would be very carefully checking in the turbo for debris or movement, both longitudinal and lateral. Turbo cassettes are not particularly expensive ($250ish) or difficult to replace if there is any movement. what none of us want is for one to fail and self fuel the engine on it's oil.

Not sure about the ability to now hear the turbo whine as I have no experience with silicone hoses but if they're more pliable then they would be likely to transfer more sound I would think.

has been working perfectly fine until now. all i did was change hoses so not sure why making this sound. all i can think is one of the hoses is leaking. the IC looked in pretty good condition and didnt seem to be leaking any cleaning fluids.

i am playing with the hoses this weekend. i have some tclamps sitting around. ill try those and see. if still making noise i'll take it to turbo expert for pro opinion.

You fill the cooling system from the plug in the top of the thermostat housing.

Do this with the cap on the expansion tank. When full replace plug.
Then remove cap from expansion tank and fill to correct level.

    Drive and check expansion tank

Also, as there is no shut off tap for the heater, there is no need to have the heater on set to hot, as this will make no difference.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
