    SUSPENSION QUESTONS

    G'day All,


    '97 300 Tdi auto, 320,000km running stock coils & 50mm steel coil spacers with front and rear sway bars removed. Xrox front bar & 12000lb winch fitted and spare moved to roof basket.


    My Disco is a daily driver/commuter. I've noticed what I would describe as a metal to metal noise when the front end encounters a sharp bump, even at low speeds. Could my problem be that the coil is binding before the bump stop halts travel? It's far more noticeable on the drivers side. I thought the bump stops should come into play before the coil binds?


    It's a very harsh 'bang' when it happens....I've been driving very conservatively since the first time I heard/felt it, but sometimes a pothole catches me out How can I tell what's happening?

    It can be coil bind, the front springs to pack up tightly. It could also be the shock absorber hitting its travel limits.

    Put a dab of bearing blue or grease on the bump stop go for a short drive, make it clunk and inspect the axle housing for the corresponding mark. Repeat with your chosen indicator in between the coils.

    Coil bind is highly likely with your described setup.

    Stock shockies?

    Check your shock closed lengths, the +50mm may well be longer than stock and bottoming out.


    I would be surprised if the springs aren't binding with 50mm spacers. The rear of mine was just starting to bind the coil with 20mm spacers.


    Yes, it should hit the bumpstops before the coils bind, but with the spacers the coil is now 50mm more compressed before the bumpstops touch.


    Standard front coils are very soft, add a bar / winch, and I think you would be hitting the front stops quite easy.

    I'm thinking I might need to replace the stock coils with a set of higher spring rated coils, to allow for the extra weight over the front axle. Bugger. More expense

    Odds on favourite is the coils. Shockies a distant second.

    You may find, if you fix the coils the shockies may become the problem.

    incidentally, rang a few places about 50mm lift on mine yesterday.

    got quotes ranging from 1500 to 2400 for 4x springs and 4x shocks.

    the cheapest being HD king springs with billstein shocks. installed.
