New cap time Dave, they're cheap enough.
I've done the 'turn the gasket over trick', but in the finish I bought a new cap as the old one was leaking far too much.

i take it your cyclonic cleaner and breather pipes are all clean and block free? did you pull the cyclonic cleaner off and degrease it and check it was clean?
Ooooops i must post a retraction here as i thought dave was talking td5... don't know how i didn't read that properly. .. sooo being a tdi then yes it may possibly be just excess blowby at those kms but also these engines can develop a compression leak between a fire ring and a pushrod gallery which can cause huge pressure. It is usually accompanied by a popping type of sound when the filler cap is removed.

I did not remove it but if you read post No. nine you will see what tests I did.
I ordered a new cap last Friday. In the mean time I got the old cap and put a bead of silicone between the cap gasket and the cap.
I left it for the weekend for the silicone to dry.
Put it back on today and it was very tight. Went for a short drive, so far so good.
I have now found the lift pump also leaking.
This is where the oil that is wetting the hoses at the rear of the motor is coming from, as I mentioned in post No. 8
An update on this engine. It is stuffed.

What would that be? Rings stuffed?
Most likely. I did cook it real bad about 20 to 30 thousand kays ago.
Put a new head on it and until now has been going fine. The cooking probably weakened something.
I am not too concerned about it as it has done 370,000 and it is now only a work hack.
I have a second hand engine lined up.
When you say cooked it badly, how so? I have had my needle go up a few times but I'm quite gauge oriented and have managed to bring it down fairly quickly. That was last year. On way to jurien last weekend the needle went to halfway a few times but ive let it come back down straight away.
Are you talking as in needle off the charts and engine smoking n bits popping off type overheating? I get so paranoid with my girl. I am doing head gasket too soon and now I'm worried. Mines done 250k n runs well. But thought while doing head gasket to maybe do bigends n rings at same time. Probably waste of time though. Have my marriage to consider as well
I am talking cooked until it stopped. Needle off the gauge almost bent on the stop:)
Why it stopped is still a mystery to me.
However, after getting it flat bedded home, by which time it had cooled down, it started and ran fine, apart from pressurizing the cooling system.
So I removed the head, all looked good, new head from the UK and until now all was good.
