    D1 300TDi 5spd LT230 failure.

    Good evening,
    I have a very late D1 300TDi, 5spd R380 and a 36D ******G LT230 transfer box. The LT230 has unfortunately 'eaten' it's rearward pinion bearing with predictably catastrophic results !
I need to get back on the road and finances preclude purchasing a reco unit immediately.
My question is will the transfer box from my 'retired' 1988 RRC, LT77 and 28D ******C LT230 fit up in order to get me back on the road ? ie will the pinion fit the R380 and are the output flanges compatible with the Disco's propshafts?
I realise there will be a variation in gearing and that the pinion will probably not be cross drilled but is it do-able until I can find and fund the correct replacement unit?
    Any advice gratefully received.

Not 100% sure about the R380 but a 1986 RRC case definitely fits a later automatic. Drive flanges should be the same.

    Thanks Bee Utey.
I'm under the pump with work so just trying to get some of the obvious SNAFUs worked out from the collective brains trust before I physically try it this weekend. So output to the axles shouldn't be a problem then? I'll whip the pinion out of the RRC and try it for a mate with the R380's output shaft before I dive in too deep but it might just work !

They're all the same spline, the difference is in the length of the spline. From memory the earlier boxes had a short spline (which wore badly) and the later boxes had long splines. Therefore an early transfer case will go on a later box but not necessarily the other way round. The early transfer can also get an upgrade in a metal plate that directs oil into the inner bore of the input gear. I got a second hand one from Ashcrofts for my little job, it wasn't dear.

    Aha !
Yes I must admit that it was with great trepidation that I undid the PTO cover on the Disco yesterday, fearing I would find the gearbox output shaft whittled down to pencil sized. I was actually quite pleased when I was peppered with bearing rollers and bits of macerated cage and saw that the damage was contained within the transfer box.
