Thread: Steering box reconditioning

Hi my steering wheel has about an inch of play in it, which I think is a worn steering box. As well the steering box itself is leaking, so I was wondering if anybody knew somewhere in Sydney that would recondition it for me. I'm happy to remove it and send it away for a couple of days if necessary. Any help would be much grateful. Many thanks

The leak may be fixable with a kit - some people have done so and described it in the forum. A search should find it.

Check that the play really is all in the box - get someone to wiggle it while you crawl under and see where the movement is. Tie rod ends and panhard bushes are far more common problems. leaking will be seal failure, not necessarily wear - and if it is wear, it will need the bush and possibly the shaft replacing - at which stage a new or reconditioned box may look cheaper.

Some free play may result from end play on the Pitman shaft, which is adjustable on top, but make sure this is not too tight.
