Personally i would be looking for a later model like 97/98 , apart from fuel use they are a comfy touring vehicle.

Hi everyone, I'm currently in the market for a series 1 3.9. Is there anything I should look out for that could be a serious issue later on. How do they go on a long trip 1800+kms? Cheers guys and girls.

I just bought a 94 3.9ltr 5speed. Iv so far only done about 120k in it driving it home and goes great and has heaps of power (has extractors and full 2.5" exhaust and aftermarket cam) but fuel usage is pretty high. Lol but she is in 31" muddies and has a 2" lift so that doesn't help.... I used to have a 97 300tdi and that was great on fuel even on aggressive muddies so if your budget stretches I'd go that route unless of coarse you want horsepower and the v8 rumble![]()
Just got back (about an hour ago) from a 7500km trip in my 3.5L D1. It went well with no problems, bar the fuel bill. I kept a fuel/km/$ log but havn't sat down to access the actual damage as yet.
Just service history really. The d1 v8's are much better than the d2 usually just due to much cooler running. They usually last well to 400,000 before just slowly losing power from cam wear etc.
Cheers
400k ?, 250 is optimistic for a RV8 camshaft.

No its not. My 95 d1 v8 is a short trip vehicle all its life. Now got just under 300,000 on the odo and a genuine 300k taking into account the 10% bigger tyres that it has been running for many years. Goes hard on petrol and on LPG. In fact feels stronger than my d2 4.0 did at 200k. Nil sign of cam wear, great compression and smooth.
My brothers 94 d1 had just over 400,000 original clicks when he sold it 2 years ago. Manual. Went hard and was smooth as silk. I drove it a few times. Oil light was staying on for a couple of seconds...bloke who bought it put on another 40k before reco.
Cheers
