Looks like mine. Not drilled, but splines appeared OK - although I'm not entirely clear how high/deep the splines should be? I had oil in there on mine though, so it has been lubricated. Mine has an oil feed sandwich plate.
Does yours have an oil feed plate as well?

Pretty sure drilling is the recommended way if you have neither.
What does the gearbox main shaft look like
From memory the input gear is a good bit harder than the mainshaft
It will be the main shaft splines that have worn
Having said that, those internal splines appear to have lubrication and no dry fretting to suggest there is a problem - but check the mainshaft too

The seal on the back end of the LT77 looks to be the same as the front of the Tbox on the same shaft.
It looks to have been weeping so perhaps I should replace it.
How does one get it out without getting into the Gbox and removing the shaft?
Drilling holes might get swarf in there.
I will do the T,box seals while its out.
A few of the boys on here have successfully drilled the gear using a cobalt bit and lots of cooling lube (with lube, anything is possible !)
The factory cross drilled gears do have the splines broached deeper so there is more engagement, but everyone that has drilled their own gear hasn't had any wear issues apparently.
Whats the replacement factory drilled gear worth?
The shaft splines look OK as well, but as this box is out of a V8 auto ,that may have something to do with it. I am swapping it for the buggered box in my TDI.
Woops. The splines are of my LT77 of course. The gear is out of the auto Tbox.
Had a go at drilling. I had a set of "diamond tip" drills I bought years ago at a farmfest. The bloke was drilling old files with them. Never used them till now. Drilled one 7mm hole OK but broke the tip off the drill as it broke through the splines on the next. Did the others with a 6mm.
Hope that will be big enough.

Actually the holes look a bit bigger than the ones I drilled.
Never mind , I guess oil will still get in there.
Got the box bolted up now and about to install the hand brake but thought I better do the speedo drive first.
Easier.
No the cable inner wont go in the square hole.
The box is a suffix E from a 93 V8 auto and the one I took out is a suffix E from a 92 TDI manual. both 1.222 ratio.
The square end on the inner on the V8 T,box is .103"
The square end on the inner on the TDI T,box is .117.
Well what do I do now?
Not going to dismantle the output housing to swap speedo drives so I could swap cables , but then is the speedo head drive different too.
If so then I will have to swap speedo,s to match
It will lose a few thou kays but.
Nothing is simple.
