    Easier.
No the cable inner wont go in the square hole.
The box is a suffix E from a 93 V8 auto and the one I took out is a suffix E from a 92 TDI manual. both 1.222 ratio.
The square end on the inner on the V8 T,box is .103"
The square end on the inner on the TDI T,box is .117.

Well what do I do now?
Not going to dismantle the output housing to swap speedo drives so I could swap cables , but then is the speedo head drive different too.
If so then I will have to swap speedo,s to match

It will lose a few thou kays but.
    Nothing is simple.
The square end is changed by changing the drive gear, which does not require stripping the output housing
Easier said than done, but remove the drive housing

    Swap over the drive gear

    Reassemble

Getting the housing out is the hard part

    Good luck!

    I should have waited
    No.
I carefully shaved a few thou off with the angle grinder untill it fit.
Thanks for that. I thought it must be a housing off job.
Someone else may get the benefit though.
Something else different between the two T,boxes. The one off the V8 auto has a switch with two terminals exiting from the left hand side of the box, fairly high up. The TDI one does not.
    No idea on that either.

Now the question is; why are they different?
Hopefully the (speedo) ratios are the same and you get an accurate reading. I would be checking your speedo against a GPS or something to be safe.

    That's a high temp/over temp sensor.

IIRC it's set to switch somewhere around 150*C ?
