I'd start by checking the valve clearances, if a lash cap fell out it's an easy fix. Also check along the manifold face for black blowy marks indicating leaks.
Gday. I have had an '86 rangie for six or seven years but have no idea about discos.
My old rangie' motor is getting really sad, the wipers have seized and there are a few other issues so I have been hunting a cheap replacement.
I now have the opportunity to buy a 95 disco td300 for only $1000. It has done almost 400 000 ks and the guy has recently done the head, brakes and running gear.
My question relates to the motor. He is selling it cheap because the diesel motor is a bit noisy. The noise is fairly recent but he has still driven it a few hundred miles and it hasn't gotten any worse. I don't know much about diesels. He says it might be the injectors but doesn't want to spend any more money on it. He also says he doesn't know much about mechanicals but a mechanic said it could be almost anything and couldn't tell him without stripping it down.
Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Loose injectors will make a racket too so check the nuts on the clamping studs.

I've learnt so much in the past few years learning how to fix things(thanks to everyone here). I love my d1 wouldn't sell it unless I could afford a 130 defender. I reckon the 300tdi is such a great engine. So much simpler than the td5 with all the electronic issues. How mechanical are you ?Can you fix things yourself ? You might get lucky, but not knowing the history of the engine ?
Thanks everyone for your advice. I appreciate it.
I told the guy I will buy it tomorrow arvo. I figure for $1000 I can't really go wrong. I know a guy who will pass anything safe for a rwc so won't (hopefully) have to spend anything to get it on the road.
I am slightly mechanical. I've pulled out Kombi motors a few times and know some basics. I can fix most things just by pulling them apart and putting them back together but don't really have enough tools to do anything 'major' like rebuilding a motor.
Jboot, I appreciate your offer. I could bring it past yatala on way home from Redland Bay exit (where it is currently), if that suits?
I have a 98 model D1 300TDI auto which has 316000+ on it and have just replaced the head, cost a bit but the vehicle is worth it in our opinion, sounds like it could be something like what has been suggested, mine had a cracked head from overheating,I would recommend fitting a low water level alarm, mine is in the brass plug on top of the thermo housing (radiator water bleed plug) and don't forget to run coolant inhibitor,I use Castrol green,(from Repco 2.5ltre bottle)at about 33 1/3 % as the head is alloy and quite often so is the radiator,if the radiator has a plastic bung in it replace with a brass one,all this should be done with a cold motor. PM me if you have questions,I am only in the Caboolture area.
cheers
