    Water Crossings

    Hey folks,

I do a fair bit of water crossings in my other 4wds and have a few questions about breathers etc for my 94 V8 disco.
I have seen other threads on here and know about diff breathers, transfer case and transmission breathers, water bras, snorkels and bow waves but I have also read about wading plugs and timing cover breathers?

Where are the wading plugs located? Can i leave them in and only drain at them end of a trip? Do i need to do something with the timing cover breathers?

Are these the only breathers/plugs i need to worry about when doing water crossings? I don't mean electrical systems - there is a really good thread elsewhere on here i read about waterproofing your electrical system.

    Thanks so much!

Only wading plug for a v8 is in the bell housing if going on a trip where you expect water crossings put it in before you leave and remove it when you get home don't leave it in for ever as eventually the bell housing will fill with oil from the usual rear main oil leaks

    Rightio, thanks.

I will check it out. Are the timing case breathers only on the diesels?

Also, does anyone know of a good breather kit i can get for the discovery that has the right thread etc and the fitting will fit on the side of the transmission.
The transmission breather is up and a linkage rod. I have seen those push fit elbow fittings but i think they will hit this rod?

    Thanks

Yeah some people fit timing case breathers on 300tdi not really required on those either. Is it auto or manual? Manual has breathers for the transfer and main gear box up on the firewall along with the front diff. The rear diff I would lenthen

What about fuel tank breather lines? Do the discoveries have those - and will they let water in during deep crossings?
    Thanks

Also, i just checked my R380 and the bell housing and i cant find a hole for the wading plug anywhere. There is a small skinny opening along the join between the bellhousing and the engine but no big hole for a wader plug?

    I have a 94 v8 also.
Worked out quickly the breathers were an issue so replaced them.
In there original location there hard to find let alone check for blockages.
Moving them up to the engine bay with micro filters works well for me.

The wading plug hole is in the lowest point of the bellhousing and is smaller than the engine sump drain plug

It may already have a plug in the hole so look for a 13mm bolt head.

Yep nothing there at all. Do all R380 gearboxes on a V8 have one?
