G'day All, The black art of engine lubrication. My 300 Tdi has 318K on the odometer. When I bought it I had a major service done and my local mechanics used Valvoline 15W-40 Super Diesel. I did the next change after 5K using Valvoline again with a new filter. Last weekend I did another oil and filter change and used a Nulon product of the same viscosity and grade but half the price. Something odd I've noticed with my fortnightly oil level checks when I get fuel is the oil takes nearly a thousand k's to get dirty. Every other diesel I have ever had made the oil filthy in a very short time, even the 2012 BT50. Am I missing something😕 The Disco doesn't burn any oil...though it seeps a bit😆

nulon, penrite and castrol mineral base oils are good for 10K intervals if your engine isnt making metal or suffering excessive blowby or generally being abused.
you didnt mention it but generally if you know what the expected oil loss/use is its more important to watch the cooling system like a hawk on the tdi(x)00

yeah, its odd, every one bags my disco at work...
its spent the least amount of time in the workshop out of all the other vehicles present. and that includes 2 full engine services and no work done at home.

Mines done every 5k as I have the fuel wound up a bit and dirtys the oil up quick
have a look at the pics i put up in the cylinder head thread thats active. shows you the cooling system neglect.
funny thing is though and dont let this make you comfortable (dont do what i did), the car never overheated, the block seems very straight, the head gasket never blew. so the old thing is built well.
just keep on top of cooling so you dont have to go the lengths i had to, to bring her back to a clean runner.
