Gday all.
I'm interested in having my rear diff welded up as my disco is 90% relegated to bush duties and don't have a concern about around town niceties.
Is it something people do in the 4wd world, or to a disco? Fitting an aftermarket lsd is pretty much out of my price range unless if falls into my lap.
I don't think I'd do the front as I'm not sure how the steering and wheel turn rate would go. Happy to be given some advice on it though.

I don't think they are legal on any public roads (the other 10%) and insurance may be an issue.
People do it in the 4WD world, bush cars normally.
The weld up the sun and planetary gears together and pack and fill with weld.
You'd want some HD axles if you're doing it in a Rover diff though.
Cheers

I've seen it done in the past to other cars, but not a 4wd as I wondered if the extra loading that a 4wd would experience (one wheel in the air sort of loading) would destroy it.
However in the last hour of reading it appears that the 10 spline is only marginally weaker than a 24 spline axle, which are both as strong as a wet paper bag, so welding it up may lead to a premature axle breakage. I'll see if there are any axles in my local area to replace with if they break. If I can source some locally and cheap I'll give it a crack and report back.
I'm afraid that I've done this a few times. Once on my and my mates bush basher hi lux, and I supervised it in the tuff truck breakdown bay earlier this year.
If longevity is not an issue then go to town.
Degrease well. Use an anti spatter spray on the splines. Keep critical parts cool with a wet rag while welding. If you want to get real fancy cut some wedges out of 10mm plate to bind the ring and sun gears then weld it all together. Mild steel mig wire is best, sadly I've used gasless wire and it was terrible with all the abrasive slag which was left behind. We actually needed to flush the diff 4 times with used engine oil to get most of it out![]()

Toxic, how long have you have you found the axles lasted?
I've installed the CIG locker in the series, D1 and RRC diffs before.
the axles last if you dont use em on black top they last well if you have the sals.
what you can do to releive the stress on it for on road use is fit a freewheeling hub but thats going to make your handling really off.

If you've benefited from one or more of my posts please remember, your taxes paid for my skill sets, I'm just trying to make sure you get your monies worth.
If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
I use it only on the road to drive to the dirt. So mostly highway.
I'm all ears on how to fit the 24 spline or salsbury axles. How do I make up the hubs?
Sorry Sean no idea. I've worked on a hilux diff and a patrol diff only.
I think it comes down to how much of a beater you want. If a proper locker mechanical or otherwise is more than the cost of a few diffs from the wreckers then you can work out which way is more economical.
