    Replacement Radiator Options

    Hey folks,
I am looking at replacing my radiator in my D1 94 V8 and just need some advice.
I see some radiators for sale have "3 rows" - is this the same as cores?
Also how many cores/rows does a stock disco radiator have - as some radiators with 3 rows are being sold as "heavy duty"?
I am looking the some at an all aluminium radiator at the moment.
    Thanks

aluminium ones will disappear in front of your very eyes. just did tdi radiator research recently. ended up paying good money to get old one re-cored as the cheaper ones have plastic tanks or are aluminium. got strongly advised to stick to original copper core good quality.

not sure bout v8 but on tdi the cooling system is the golden child. needs the utmost care and best quality.

i wouldnt skimp here if the v8 are as prone to cooling dramas as the tdi.

one of the other members here got hold of second hand one, but be careful what you get. might want to pressure test it first.

    Thanks for the input.
What do mean by 'disappear'? The radiators i am looking at are all aluminum, tanks and all, and is all tig welded. Dont they use aluminium radiators on high performance race cars etc?
    Thanks

So nobody knows how many cores a standard D1 V8 radiator has?
I have read elsewhere that aluminium radiators are recommended for off roading?

i was told aluminium is fairly brittle and not good for bumpy stuff. alsmo by disappear i mean that they corrode away to dust. this is just what i was told by LR experts here in perth. which is why i just got my old one recored. i was originally looking at the allisport ones coz they look solid but was strongly advised against it. some other people may be able to elaborate more. i am just going on other's expert opinions.

I guess race cars use it for the weight reduction and not too worried bout corrosion element as the maintenance on them is fairly strict and would constantly be doing work to keep on top of issues etc.

im sure you dont want to change coolant every few trips and all the other stuff.

    Thanks for the info.
How many cores does your standard radiator have - even though it's a diesel?

You wont need to cap the unused fittings.

The un-used fittings are oil coolers, so you should be able to leave them uncapped. I'd probalby try to get a quality core fitted to the existing radiator. The biggest problem I can see with the aluminium radiator is you can't get it "rodded" out... 'Cos you can't dismantle it. If it's good quality there is no way it would "dissolve". They whole V8 engine is alloy, does it dissolve ?

Another positive with the older radiators is all you need is a stick of solder and a torch .... and you can repair them anywhere, even if your stuck in the bush (those two part resin ribbons seem to repair them quite well too).
