how much oil are you using per how many km?
Evening all,
I've stroked the 3.9 in my D1 out to 4.6. It is still "fresh" (around 2,500 km) but is using a bit of oil. I ran it in using a semi synthetic Fuchs on the recommendation of the engine builder but have switched to a straight mineral Castrol 20W50 since the first change.
What oil consumption are people getting in modified V8s and is there a consensus on "best" oil for modified engines?

roughly 500ml per 500 km - so 1.0 litres per 1000km - but I'm doing an exact consumption test at the moment
needs to be a zinc oil regardless of brand,
not sure I'd run a 20w in Melbourne,,
I would have run the oils the other way round,, hmm.

I'll use a lower weight in winter - has been 35 + out in the hills down here!
I wouldnt use semi or synthetic oil in a new engine. There are plenty of "running in" oils. Might be worth putting in an engine flush in then draining the oil out and giving a running in oil a try. There's also a fair bit written on how to run in an engine. General rule is dont be too kind to them, can lead to glazed bores = oil consumption.
No saying this is the best oil but has some interesting reading on the page. Penrite Oil - A Better Class Of Oil

My two RV8s (3.9 and 4.6) hardly use any oil at all.
Don't run in a new engine on anything synthetic, especially a flat tappet old school engine with large diam oil galleries.
I suggest running it in with something cheap and basic like KMart brand oil to bed the rings in properly - that's what my local engine builder recommends (Chris Milton Race Engines).
Then after 800 to 1,000 km dump the oil and move onto something like Gulf Western 20W/50 which is made for older pre 2000 engines and still has a reasonable component of zinc in it for the sake of your cam/lifters, etc.
We use a dedicated running in monograde 30 oil for 1500km then a 15w40 mineral like shell rimula (yes it is a diesel spec but has great detergents and is overspec for old school engines petrol and turbo diesel) . I would expect no more than 1l per 5000km consumption.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
Thanks everyone for the advice. The car got a good caning yesterday up Andersons Track at Gembrook. It is due a GB/TC/diff oil change so will dump the engine oil at the same time and switch to G&W.
It sounds to me that the rings have not yet bedded in.
An Italian tune up is called for, eg up the Dandenongs towing a 1tonne trailer.
My son had a Cordia Turbo engine rebuilt by a reputable company and it ran like a dog for 4KK . Then he gave it heaps and it improved enormously and did not use oil.
There are two types of piston rings, 1 designed for new engiones and one for replacement, and Chrome moly rings if used should have a plateau hone or they can take forever to bed in.
Normal usage of oil usually depends on the valve guides and seals used but in the order of 500Ml to 1 litre in 5000K is the norm.
