    300tdi throws aircon belt

    Hello everybody!

My trusty Disco has brought a new challenge upon me:
The Aircon belt keeps tearing/flying off the back of the pulleys.

Earlier this year I replaced the front timing belt cover due to the bearing being buggered, and replaced all aircon pulley bearings while I was at it -- tensioner arm, the idler and even the bearing in the compressor clutch.

It all seemed well and off I went to explore some corrugations on the Gunbarrel Highway, when suddenly the aircon belt tore -- or frayed might be a better word.
It was a brand new belt, but a couple of inches hung off the inner side of the belt, maybe 5 mm off the edge.

Never mind, I thought and next opportunity replaced it with my spare belt... but the joy only lasted 2 days before the same thing happened (again with a brand new belt.

I haven't had the time to tinker with it since and simply left it off, but the time has come to fix the aircon again (very hot at the moment .

In the process the compressor wires had been stripped, causing a short and blowing the fuse so the other day I repaired all that and stuck another new belt on, but unfortunately only 3 days later the belt has torn again.

    Few notes:

When I put it on with recommended torque on the tensioner arm the belt seems to ride up the back of the compressor pulley, so I added a bit more tension, thinking maybe a new belt needs some more tension....??
With the engine running the belt does not ride up the compressor pulley anymore, however I can see exactly those 5 mm of the belt running off the inner edge of the tensioner arm pulley. When I stop the engine the belt squares up on the pulley again,....

What could be the problem here guys?
I have another tensioner arm with a seized bearing floating around, might stick a new bearing in that and try it out, but other than that any suggestions would be very very helpful

    Thanks everyone...
    Simone

the alignment is off on one of the pullies or worse the harmonic balancer.

What He^ said. although, it seems to me the other belt would throw if it was the hamonic balancer. Are all your bearings still tight?

    Thanks guys,

With the engine running - belt off and on - I cannot seem to isolate one pulley running off centre... would you be able to see if the alignment is off?

Main serpentine belt is staying on.

Will inspect all bearings again over weekend... but like I said they're fresh in there..

Any chance of making a mistake with the harmonic balancer? ... obviously had it off to change front timing belt cover --- did tighten it according to specs... and made sure it sat square on the little key thing..?
Is it worth taking it off again? Any way I can test/check to make sure its right?

the harmonic balancer is only likely to be the problem if its damaged, you'd see it, its usually done when levering the thing off of the crank.

the alignment doesnt have to be out by much 1/2 a rib width is enough to make it throw off, especially if the belt doesnt have an auto tensioner (like the main).

I've seen the AC pump not bolted down squarely before when a zip tie for the electrical harness got caught under the back of the pump kicking it off just a fraction and that was causing the AC pump pully to chew up the belt.

It can also be caused by overtensioning the slack adjuster or the slack adjuster not sitting properly when its got load on it. looks fine without the belt tho.

    good luck

    Cheers,
I used a bolt as a dowel in the centre of the crank and a pulley puller to get the thing off without levering around too much.. (then a smear of grease when put it back on to make it easier next time
will give it a good look over as well though to make sure-sure..

I did actually also replace the compressor mounting doovely as 2 of the 3 studs were stripped and barely held the thing in place before,.. so will also make sure that thats on properly.

...so much to do, so little time

Thanks for the suggestions.. hoping to get it fixed soon!
