    Shredded Serpentine Belt

Hi All. Happy New Year etc. Recently I changed the Serpentine belt on my 98 300 TDI Disco 1. Nothing wrong with the old belt. It'd just been on a while, so changed it for safety's sake

I'd be surprised if new belt did 3-4,000 kms before it totally shredded itself on a very hot day over Xmas break. Old belt was a Gates 1580. Replacement (shredded) belt was a Dayco 7PK 1580.

I've bought a new Gates 1580 belt and fitted it and it is running fine. There are no pulleys that seem to be out of alignment and all pulleys turn easily and smoothly, including tensioner pulley.

Any idea why this might have happened? Do Discos not like Dayco belts? Should my focus be on the tensioner pulley and tensioner assembly?

    All suggestions welcome.

    Cheers

Have you checked the PAS pump shaft end float? Movement there can chew up the belt & it's a fairly common problem.

another culprit is the water pump. They do not have to have very much movement either for it to occur . Also check for any burrs on the pulley grooves. It is also possible to get a small stone/ gravel flick up during offroading and it gets caught, starts a small tear in a rib and it goes downhill from there.

Sand will also kill a belt very quickly. Take a spare.

Another culprit if it was not fitted correctly - if the belt is off by one groove on a pulley will also destroy a belt.

A lot of Genuine belts are in fact DAYCO, they often the the word Dayco on them as well, so there is nothing wrong with the belts. A relatively new belt will rarely fail unless there is an underlying problem as mentioned by others.
As said by others, its usually a pulley that is the culprit. Or incorrect fitting when releasing the tensioner sometimes the belt can miss a rib somewhere.
Then the installer installs another belt and it is fitted correctly and assumes the previous belt was faulty.

PAS pulleys can wander on the shaft or end float. I had a new belt go on mine once and it was the PAS pulley had wandered out and the belt got jammed in between the pump and the pulley. Water pumps another area as is the harmonic balancer.
    Regards, Mario
