back lash or play in gearbox/ transfercase

how much play is ok in the transfer case/gear box in a d1 3.9 v8

i was out on some tracks around omeo / dargo this long weekend notice alot of play and or backlash and i dont like the sound of it?

althou the old disco hasn't been on the road in 18months and i forgot what she was like she performed nicely after much hard driving only a small list of repairs needed mostly bushes and front bearings

    cheers matt

I'm not sure how much is ok, but is there a big noticeable clunk? Mines git a fair bit of back lash, but only notice it in first. I'd like to know if anyone has successfully removed backlash via, replacing the thrust washers in the centre diff (pls correct me if wrong) which I've been told is one of the causes, aside from the obvious transfer input shaft wear.

Most of the backlash is in the suspension bushes and related components, i think it would have to be really bad for it to actually cause any damage.

I replaced mine in centre diff. All shafts good condition. Backlash still present. But it may be different situation in yours. There are lot of places where it can develop. Starting from input shaft gearbox gears xfer case gears centre diff tailshafts diffs front cvs and drive splines. Once you add it all up it's strange that every 4wd doesn't have backlash
I still don't know where mine is coming from.

    sorry for late replys,

when i first bought the disco i had same back lash i the transfer case, the transfer case lasted 3 years before i busted the one of the shafts right out,

well when driving from gear to gear you can hear a bang bang or when sitting on say 100 and you lift your foot off to slow it then appy alleration you can hear it bang

but in saying that with hand brake on front drive shaft has quiet alot of play so im not sure
