Got an email back from Shane at Whyatt's Land Rover in Geraldton WA, (who did a mountain of work on my County and I would highly recommend him!). He thinks cross pin n the front diff.
I dont really have the time to play with it, so will get it to a mechanic to have a look
Funny how its not making any grinding or crunching noises when I do get it driving though (??).....

    Negative ghost rider.....

if it was the cross pin by now it would have spat it out the casing.

this thing is observable through the fill and drain plugs without too much effort.

it will have a lot of metal in the diff oil if it has blown this component. you will see lots of metal parts that look like gear tooth edges and faces and not small triangular bits that look like shrapnel.

its a posability certainly but not the most likely one.

Thanks mate...This was pretty much what I was thinking...I would have expected more "signs" of something been terminally wrong if it was a diff.
Am trying to organise a colleague's husband who is a mechanic to do a "cashie" job for me I think I might stick my finger in the diff hole tomorrow before work for my own peace of mind

I can probably arrange for the parts you need to be in loc by thursday (unless you happen to have access to another disco to rat for parts)

    Im not busy this weekend..

and yeah, Im kind of that bored and the vehicle is still packed from my last lot of spanner twirling.

    All sorted
Now going well. Turned out to be a smashed up CV on the driver's side. The CV looked almost new....The problem may have risen due to that the person who did the earlier work "forgot" to put in a couple of bearings, shims and didnt put a cir-clip back on!
Now to get a mechanic to remove the LPG tank and fittings...taking up to much rear space...Cant fit all the fishing gear in!!
Thanks to all for their help and advice
