Thread: Coolant system question

Could be partially blocked radiator or thermostat problem. Is it a V8? If so you really need to get it sorted as they don't like getting too hot too often. Viscuous fan can also not work as it should.

Solutions: remove the radiator and get it rodded or replace with a new one; remove and test thermostat and replace if necessary; visc fan you can test in place by turning it, if it's faulty replace or chuck it and fit EL Falcon twin thermo electric fans.

First thing is forget about your factory temp gauge, they are ****in ****!

I towed my 15ft caravan on a 28deg day and cooked the crap out of my 300tdi and the gauge never moved off 1/3, where it always sits after warn up.

Get one of those digital gauges that have a sensor on the head or block.

I just replaced my fan viscous clutch and it fixed all my overheating problems. Touch wood. I got the part from Rover Lord, great product and service, highly recommend him. And yep get a temp gauge. Tell him you are a member here.

Whats the history of this motor Daniel? Did it have any work done to it?
OIL pressure ok? if not getting enough oil this could cause that HOT MOTOR Smell.

Are the thermos kicking in? They should if its getting too hot.
I find my car (v8 disco) smells a little hot when i flog it on hot days.
Temp gauge does not change from 1/2.
I did do a radiator a few months ago and when that went the temp gauge did rise so i assume my gauge works and this is normal.
I just put it down to my car sweating different fluids and perhaps that is causing the smell

I also want to get a digital unit to remove any doubt.

As other have said;;;

1) it's IMPERATIVE that you fit a digital temp gauge with alarm......did I say IMPERATIVE!!!!! I fitted MadMan and made my own viscous fan tacho that operates continuously with digital readout.

2) Make sure the viscous fan is working...they do a lot more than people think.

3) Electric fans should not need to come on unless AC is on or of the thing is overheating.....

4) Blocked radiator, reduced air flow (bugs)

5) Air trapped in cooling system, bleed and check level.

6) Lots of other less common more obscure reasons.

Really? What about hot days in low gear high revs?
Because i seem to be able to get the thermos working and i dont think my car is overheating as you suggest.

Not in my experience, not from normal driving even on 40C days up long hills with AC on, mine hasn't been past 96C absolute MAX, usually about 92C up hills AC on.... I think the fans come on post 100C ...?? Not sure of the exact value.

But as you say if its getting hot via very hard work or the system is not overly efficient they should come on. But with normal driving I doubt they would be coming on unless there are problems with the cooling system.....which is what I meant, Hall didnt state he was putting it under a heavy work load, just a hot day.


I added a digital thermocouple into the inner shroud to measure air temp post radiator, its a good indicator as high temps in the shroud might suggest poor air flow.
