Unhappy Front diff problem? Broken Axle?

Thought I might have another look at the front end re higher speed shakes. Got both front wheels of the ground. Spun passenger side wheel, front prop shaft did not spin. Ok I thought as that will be the spider gear side. Went and spun the drivers side wheel and the the prop shaft still did not move. So both front axles are not being driven by the prop shaft ? One should, as I believe, be driven and the other gets it`s drive through the spider gears. As it looks now none are been driven. Took the filler plug out and there is a crown gear still in there. Broken axle?

Assuming you had the vehicle in park or in gear (manual) you won't get the drive shaft to spin. You will however see the opposite wheel spin in the other direction if everything is OK.

If you leave a wheel on the ground with the car in neutral and spin the one in the air that should spin the prop shaft. I think...

It is easy to pull the axles out, may also be worth doing.

Leave the front wheels jack up and lock the centre dif/transfer box.
With the brake on this will stop the tail shaft turning.
Spin one wheel, the opposite should turn.
If no movment check for a striped drive flange first before looking for a broken axle or spiders.

If you are chasing a vibration/shakes it is highly unlikely that it would be anything inside the axle housing.

These are generally caused by tailshaft or tyres. Have you tried removing each tailshaft in turn and driving on the other?

And the post above by Rangieman hit the nail on the head, re diff axle breakage.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
