Just ordered a new one. Only $25 so that should sort out some of my knock. I'm confident a fair bit of my rear end noise is due to both my welded diff causing the wheels to grab on tar pulling the diff back and forward. This combined with when I fitted new springs I used the jack to push the diff down and may have over done it and pulled the socket apart a tad.

Those adjustable ones sound like trouble from the get go just based off how you describe the way in which they work. I'll just order a new standard one and replace it after adding a grease zerk (I like serviceable parts/joints) even though the squeaking has stopped altogether.
