    300 Tdi Erratic Tachometer

    G'day All,
Lately the tachometer in my 97 300 Tdi Disco is not reading correctly. The needle bounces around a lot for a while then behaves normally before getting the jitters again. Happens at all revs. Is this an easy diagnosis? Should I just ignore it? My Disco is an auto so the rev counter isn't a necessity. Cheers William 😎

The tacho is driven from your alternator - from the 'W' terminal on the back of it to be precise. Check to see if this connection is loose or if your alternator is functioning correctly.

You could be getting an early warning of an imminent failure.

The connection is on the back of the alternator. Check the connector for tightness and breaks.

The W Terminal on the back of the alternator is the tachometer feed. The plug needs to be crimped a little to ensure a good connection. The only other reason for this is when the alternator is on the way to failing but try the wire repair first.

Thanks for the lightning fast responses! I'll check the W terminal on the alternator on Saturday 😎 Hopefully it's just a crook connection 😨

I have a voltmeter fitted that reads the starting battery voltage continuously and it mostly sits at about 13.9 volts. Drops to 13.5 with lights, wipers and air con on. Does that sound OK?😔
