How do I replace the rear window?

On a recent trip up north, I broke the rear window on my 300tdi Discovery. I have a donor door with a good window in it. How do I remove the glass from the donor door? If necessary, where is a good place to buy a new rubber seal?

Use a stanley knife to cut the seal if its no good , hopefully the seal out of your original door is still useable.

Is there a method to get the window out without cutting the seal? I don't know which seal is in better condition. I assume that it needs to be pliable to fit the window back into the door.

    Easily

Hi mate, just go around the seal on the inside and gently prise the seal away from the door flange. When you have gone all the way around start working the seal off the door using levers and leaving them in place a bit like taking a tyre off a rim. If you start at one side half way down and work to the bottom and part way up the other side you should get the glass clear of the panel, at this stage the glass may pull out of the channel leaving the rest of the seal to come out easily.

When fitting the glass and seal back into the door ensure the surfaces are clean, free from old sealant, apply a caulking compound that does not dry out and go hard to the glass side of the seal so as to ensure no leak between the seal and the glass. Put a liberal amount of sealant in the outside groove of the seal and wrap a length of electrical wire around the groove ensuring it overlaps by a good way with the ends both protruding on the inside of the vehicle. Have someone assist holding the glass assembly into place. If you have the overlap at the top fit the top of the assembly into place the best you can so one side of the flange of rubber seal is in place and gently using a circular motion, you will see which way to circle, work the seal into place. Do this the whole way around, being careful not to apply too much pressure as to break either the seal or the glass. The overlap is to ensure you do not run out of pull before you get the complete seal in.

Good luck, it really is fairly straight forward.

You can soften the rubber with a hairdryer which will make it easier push out.

I replaced the window today. I couldn't get the loop of wire to work, so I manipulated the seal with small screwdrivers.

    wire loop

Glad you managed the job, how is less important. Peeling it in with screwdrivers does stand more chance of damaging the rubber, glad you didn't.

    Cheers
