Would Like Wrenching Help In Perth

Wanting to check and adjust my valve clearances soon. But only having done it on single cylinder motorcycles before I feel a bit wary tackling this one on my own without some oversight. I've got a basic set of tools with me that should be able to handle the job, but I don't have anything with enough leverage to turn the crank or a torque wrench, and of course nor does my hostel or anyone at it. So if there's anyone in the greater Perth region who wouldn't mind helping out a newly forged Land Rover diehard and traveler I'd be mighty appreciative of it and in your debt (beer, barbecue, name your price).

its the same as doing a single pot, but you do it 4 times.

you dont need a torque wrench to do the valve adjustments

to turn it over you just put a spanner on the bolt on the alternator pully and crank it around slowly, if its fighting you just remove the glow plugs (or put it in neutral yes, I still get caught out occasionally)

the easiest way is with rule of 5, turn the engine slowly until an inlet valve begins to open and then adjust the valves on the pot when added to that cylinders number equals 5.

when you've adjusted all the valves roll the engine over a couple of times and then check them all.

if they havent been done in a while or they are a long way out wind the adjuster all the way out, carefully remove the lash cap on top of the valve inspect it and replace them on the next service if they are mushrooming.

You can also jack up the from d/s wheel, put the transmission in 5th gear and turn the motor over that way.

There is also the rule of nine. When 8 is rocking, adjust 1, when 7 is rocking, adjust 2 etc. It's pretty simple. If you've done a single cylinder, you'll be able to do this. Just more of them and takes longer...

the rule of 9 is for individual valves... its not when they're rocking its when the valve is open.

the rule of 9 is better as it gives you more turns of the engine if you start at valve 1 and work your way through all of them when you get back to 1 your ready to keep rolling on the checks.

the book way is to turn the engine over to TDC on #1 adjust all loose valves roll the engine over 360 degrees on the crank and then adjust the other 4 valves.

Nope, I mentioned it somewhere on here (I think in the what did you do too your disco thread) that I wound up not returning back to the US. So the trip will continue for at least another few months.

    Thanks everyone for the advice.
