    Oil Temperature Sender

Say i was going to install an engine oil temperature sender + gauge...

where would you install the sender unit? VDO style one.

Does the 300tdi block have any spare slots where you can screw it in? or would it be a case of drill/tap somewhere (assume sump). Where would the most accurate oil temperature reading come from. Once the oil thermo opens up it would drop the overall temp or just stop it getting hot as quick i assume.

does the sump oil generally have the same temp as rest of oil? and best place to tap it? got told you can put it where drain plug is but it's also a high risk location and can be ripped out. dont see how though, if you were to hit something that high you would probably dent your sump anyway.

I was going to do this a a few years ago and it was going to involve brazing a fitting into the sump.
That will give you the best 'average' and most meaningful temp IMO.

I think VDO used to do a sender in a sump plug, but can't recall what size it was.
To me it would be a little vulnerable there, I was going to mount my sender a little higher.

I got a M10 to 1/8th NPT adapter for one of my senders.
I got a gauge kit that had one oil pressure sender and an oil temp sender.
So I had to cobble up an array of adapters and angles so as to allow easy fitting(ie. access to them all).

Get them from a good performance parts shop(where all the rice burner modders seem to frequent! )

Here in Vic we have the large VPW(Vic Perfomance Warehouse) .. not too far from me too
They have a website if you don't have any similar local shop .

The oil pressure sender is a large unit, unlike the slimmer oil temp sender unit, so that was the trouble.

Basically, undo the oil pressure warning light sender.
    It should be M10.
About $20-$30 will get you a long bolt looking adapter, with a M10 male end, M10 female end and a female 1/8th NPT female access.

Your original oil pressure unit bolts back on to the end recess and the new (most likely to be 1/8th NPT) sender bolts into the side port.

Super easy to do for just that setup as there's a ton of room on that side of the engine.
Little bit more tricky from the top as it's just under the injection pump(so it's in your way) .. but from underneath there's room to spare.

Shouldn't take more than about 10-30mins .. depending on how long and home many smoko breaks you take

Careful using any thread tape on the threads as it can affect earthing and give incorrect or no reading.
I used very little right at the ends so as to make more of an o ring type seal .. and keep the bulk of the thread free from any tape.

Alternatively to getting a M10 to 1/8NPT adapter, is that you can cobble something up yourself with parts available from a hose/pneumatics supplier.
The parts I got were all nice strong brass, but more expensive.
I had to get them, otherwise it'd have been hard to fit the two new senders(and I wanted to keep the original oil pressure warning light active too).

Appreciate the detailed response but i already have oil pressure set up with a tpiece for my ems2. Just need oil temperature, or not. Depending how useful it really is. If it's something that don't really need to worry so much about can give it a miss.

What point is there in keeping the red oil idiot light when you have the Madman Fausto? I disconnected mine,,,I saw no need for it.

had the adapter and like to keep factory stuff active. didn't take any more or less time for me. i dont particularly like the way the pressure sender sits out so far though and it does leak a bit of oil out of adapter, so looking at possibly changing the setup or removing the tpiece and leaving just the EMS pressure sender in at the next oil change. probably mounted to wheel arch with a line going to it.

was more concerned with oil temperature though. this thread is about temp, not pressure and whether its worthwhile or not necessary.

The oil temp gauge for the Auto box oil is in the line going to the oil cooler, maybe the best place for oil temp would be in the oil line before it gets to the cooler in the radiator, Regards Frank.

The engine oil temperature probe in a 101 goes in the oil cooler where the oil comes into it. As a retrofit in a D1 maybe a T piece at the oil cooler inlet piece then no modifications to any OEM bits.
