    Auto trans service interval

Question re auto transmission servicing intervals on my 98 tdi.
It had a full service incl filter change 17000km and 18 months ago.
IIRC it has synthetic fluid in it.
It was apparently due for the next service in June this year or at 280000 ( currently 277000).
So that means they are suggesting a 20000km interval.
That seems very little for synthetic oil to me.
The car does not have a particularly hard life. It towed the (500kg) camper recently on a 4000km trip otherwise most of those km were on the Anne Beadel trip August/Sep last year.
The trans temp light has not come on as I have an after market trans cooler and temperature gauge that I monitor - it has not over heated and the oil color seems the same as new.
    Should I book it in?

was there a known distance previous to the 18month change?
18 months? yea I'd probably do it.
17K kays is not a lot, but factoring where its been driven,, and where its likely to go--

    so why the concern?
change of mechanic at last service?
Lots of people that tow stuff on here would consider a 20K service interval quite reasonable.

I think LR have vastly underserviced their auto's since the D1,
The main reason we see "filled for life' on newer ones is the service centres no longer have to worry about getting rid of old oil---
got nothing to do with longevity.
just good business sense, not necessarily better engineering

The D2 auto is the elec' controlled version of the D1 auto.

D2 service interval for auto is 40,000km with std DexIII oil.

If your doing s bit of towing &/or off-road driving and are using a synth oil, then sticking to the 40k interval is ok ... imho. If it's hard work all the time then 20k.

TransmaxZ is a truck and bus spec Synth with oil change intervals in the hundreds of thousands of km's ... I run this and tow and change every 40k.
