    Wheel Nuts

I am wanting to get rid of the SS capped (non-locking) wheel nuts on my D1 as they are a real pain and if you are stuck somewhere remote it's an extra headache that you dont need.

basically i wanted to change them with solid cast nuts. i have found some around with part number NRC7415. although, some websites say they fit discoveries with alloy wheels and other say Discovery 1 upto vin KA052252.

did they change the wheel stud size or thread between disco 1s or will these fit any disco 1. I thought they would all be same size.

The thread should be the same as the steel wheel nut is the same for the later Discos. I don't have physically have one in my hand to check but it might be that the alloy wheel hole it has to fit could be different on the earlier alloy wheels to the later wheels ????? or taper at the the base???? that could be why it says to vin KA052252
    Cheers, Mario

Ritters in Melbourne can sell you a mag wheel nut from a classic range rover of some description which has no stainless steel cap for $6.00 ( plus gst) & fits the alloy disco 1 wheels.

I simply removed the SS covers and kept the same nuts. Actually, I had no option, as some ****** with a rattle gun had them that tight it was the only way to undo them.

Never had any problems with the nuts but i use a 27mm inpact socket and extendable breaker bar, forget using any genuine LR brace as they are like cheese sticks.

Yea i have a good impact socket and breaker bar but need to give socket bit of oil and then good wack with piece of wood to get it on and the getting it back off is a pain. Would rather just have solid wheel nuts so dont need to worry.

we had the same problem with our 98 model D1,I had to cut the covers off with a 4 inch angle grinder with a thin cutting wheel, then went to a Land Rover wreckers and bought some second ones,5 from memory,I use a 27mm and a swivel breaker bar.

    cheers

I just use a 2 foot breaker bar and a torque wrench to do up with a socket, and never use an impact gun. Also have a rubber mallet in the car to flog the socket on if need be, as well as being useful for flogging hilux owners.
