Electric Windows on 2 Door - Little Help

    Hey everyone,

I bought an old and neglected 1991 2 door Land Rover Discovery a few months back and have been fixing it up with a heap of useful info everyone has posted on this forum but I've got a little stuck.

The electric windows have suddenly stopped working. It's a 1991 2 door Disco so I've looked at a few other guides about a common problem with the window ECU behind the glove box... but my little wagon doesn't have a glove box haha. Also checked all fuses since I'm not sure which would be for the windows.

Just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.

    Cheers everyone!

If it is a 91 2 door they didn't have electric windows standard and I think you'll find that location is for the update disco that came out in mid 94 (with a glove box)

Try cleaning the switches as the contacts get crap in them over the years.

Then try putting 12V straight to the motor to see if that has failed.

At least then you will know roughly where the fault is.

I have two 93 2 doors and they both have electric windows but I have never looked for the ecu, so can't help with that.

Post some pics of your truck.

If like an RRC there is constant 12v to the window motors with ign on and they earth through the switches. So check with a multimeter.

also earth the inputs to the switches before anything else.

    Oh check the fuses.
If you decide to pull the switches apart have a very big sheet to catch all the ball bearings and springs.

Maybe I should have said "Ask me how I know."
BTW AFAIR Mercedes Benz switches from that era are the same , if that helps and a wrecker is needed.
Usually it is grease and dirt buildup in a switch that causes the problem and a good flush with contact cleaner may help, but if both are US then there may be another cause.

Thanks everyone, I'll go check it out today and will report back how I get on.

The drivers side switch was playing up before which I fixed with a good clean out but both have suddenly stopped working.

    Simple one in the end.

Found a 15amp inline fuse hidden under some electrical tape tucked up right under the dash. Swapped it out and windows are back in operation.

Cheers everyone for your help. I'll post some photos of the Disco soon too.
