The wheels run in tracks, The tracks are pinched a little at the ends to stop the wheels coming out - that should set the limit for the winder gear. If plastic wheel breaks then it can sometimes get past the pinch, which then causes the winder gear to separate. And sometimes a wheel can jam in the pinch! The pinch will have to be opened to get the new wheel in, then closed again.
