    Help needed Ignition problem?

First up for those that don`t know. I have a 97 3.9 V8 on gas. Over the weekend it cut out on gas whilst I was driving along. Changed to petrol and it ran as well as it does on petrol. So I thought it was a gas problem. This line of though was removed today. Nearly to work and it cut out on petrol. Got it to a mechanic and the thing started and has run like a dream. mechanic can not fault it. What he did say though was it may be the distributor. There is wires on the inside that over time with the unit advancing and retarding back and forth break ? He also said there is a Bosch conversion that you can do ? At a grand for the conversion I don`t wan`t to go that way unless there is no other option.

First of all your mechanic is a rip off merchant! Look up the bee utey Bosch conversion...will cost hardly anything...or get a scorcher distributor...excellent bit of kit...i think it cost me $650 for the whole thing when i had my D1.

Yes it could be the amp cutting out when it gets hot. Does it restart ok once the engine has cooled off a bit? You can replace this cheaply with the above-mentioned and more reliable Bosch module or you can go the whole hog and replace the entire dissy with a Scorcher which is predominantly all Bosch components including the internal amp module. Cost me $600 plus postage. Expensive but great quality and its fit and forget.

I had an intermittent problem with the electronic dizzy in my old 85 rangie, would play up every now and then, one day i stopped at the shops for milk and went to start car and would not fire.
Went thru all the scenario's and possible issues but still wouldnt start so the old man gave me a tow the 500m to home.
Took dizzy out and down to performance ignition where they found the wire that runs to the coil had a fine break in it, cheapest fix in that car.

The Lucas wires are very thin and seem like they could fracture quite easily. With the Scorcher you get two much thicker wires exiting the dissy - one red wire (connects to coil +ve) and one black wire (connects to coil -ve). That's it, no stuffing around wiring up remote amps. The Scorchers have a custom advance curve to suite the engine spec, runs smoother with more power.

I inherited a scorcher points dizzy from my dads 85 rangie and put it in my 81 rangie and it was like an instant power upgrade.

Well I got the part from bee utey. It`s all fitted up and the Disco fired up first shot and better than before, instant no cranking. So it`s back on the road tomorrow.
