I'm changing over the pipes to and from the intercooler and notice that they, and the pipe to the air filter, all have vortex type metal inserts, some pipes have one on each end. Are these original fixtures or aftermarket add ons from the previous owner? Are they necessary? What do they do to the air, and should I move them into the new pipes? If so, how many to which pipe??

SupporterOK there seems to be half a dozen hiclone devices in this engine. Someone must of been looking for a super power boost (ha ha).
Having not opened up a turbo diesel before, I was just wondering if Land Rover placed these into the air pipes, but from doing a bit of reading, it seems the pipes were clear of devices when new.

There is only one useful vortex generating device on a 200TDi provided by LR, and that's the turbocharger. All the other ones will do nothing other than impede the airflow. Sell all the fake ones on ebay, you should get a few bucks for them from the gullible public.
