Thread: Who's Running a Defender Transfer Case in a Disco Tdi300?

Well, I've re-fitted some original Tyres back onto my Disco (235/70/16) to see how it drives and I got to say around town it has made it far more nippier than before + better fuel economy.....
This got me thinking about doing up a bit of an excel spreadsheet up to compare the differences of running standard tyres (235/70/16) and Transfer Case(1.21:1) vs running the larger tyres (235/85/16) & Defender Transfer Case (1.41:1) would be.....

I'm not sure if I got all the gearing figures right (mines an Auto) but I was surprised to see that if I was to run the 1.41 Transfer Case and the larger tyres, that at 2250rpm that I would only be doing a speed of 94kms/hr whereas at 2250rpm with the std tyres & 1.21 Transfer Case I would be doing 100kms/hr.... That works out at around a 6% loss but the benefit would be that I could run the larger tyres and still have better response around town and I assume it would also tow better...?

Have I got the right figures and is my maths right? Still wondering if this is worth doing and possibly a cheaper option than Turbo/IC upgrades....

I've currently got a Tdi300 Auto and running 25/85/16 tyres. I like the setup for offroading, etc, but on road when towing a 800kg trailer or just driving up reasonable inclines, the old girl struggles and I'd to see what I can do to improve it....
I'd like to know whether simply swapping out the Disco Transfer Case for a Defender Transfer Case would make a reasonable improvement to it's towing and Hwy Driving when faced with those mountain ranges.....

Is there anyone out there that has done this and advise me as to what their opinions/experiences might be (good or bad)?

Hoping also for a slight economy improvement too as that also has declined in past months....
