    Towing in 6th.

Chris towing in too high a gear with the engine "lugging" is not good for the engine and can result in High EGT's, better to tow in top gear (1:1) than overdrive, use the gears (Manual or Auto) to keep the engine in it's comfort zone, in my 94 TDi Disco Auto I don't let revs drop below 2000 rpm, or go much over 3250 rpm, seems to be the sweet spot for this engine with EGT's in the mid 500's, Regards Frank.

Yes of course, but if the engine is not labouring I cant see a problem, I had not heard of top gear being weak ie no good for towing if the engine is happy.

I find 6th should not be used much below about 2000 revs. It will cruise at 100 kmh in 6th at about 2200 revs. I change down at about 90 kmh in 6 th.

Gear ratio for 5th gear in a Puma Defender is 1:1 and what I used to tow with. See below.
