Yes of course, but if the engine is not labouring I cant see a problem, I had not heard of top gear being weak ie no good for towing if the engine is happy.

Chris towing in too high a gear with the engine "lugging" is not good for the engine and can result in High EGT's, better to tow in top gear (1:1) than overdrive, use the gears (Manual or Auto) to keep the engine in it's comfort zone, in my 94 TDi Disco Auto I don't let revs drop below 2000 rpm, or go much over 3250 rpm, seems to be the sweet spot for this engine with EGT's in the mid 500's, Regards Frank.

I find 6th should not be used much below about 2000 revs. It will cruise at 100 kmh in 6th at about 2200 revs. I change down at about 90 kmh in 6 th.
Gear ratio for 5th gear in a Puma Defender is 1:1 and what I used to tow with. See below.
