    Looking for a D1

    Hi Guys

I am looking at buying a D1 300 tdi Automagic for my son. He has a manual 91 diesel Jackaroo atm and whilst it's a great truck and a pleasure to drive, parts are currently getting harder and harder to find and he isn't the most mechanically minded, but I have rebuilt a few series vehicles, a Rangie classic, an old Holden and I currently have a 2.2 Puma Fender, so I am not adverse to swinging a spanner in anger. I also had one myself back in the earlier noughties which we loved. I was just wanting to ask people to refresh my memory as to what the main things are I should be looking for, like Timing belt services etc. I vaguely remember something about the immobiliser behind the stereo as well.
    TIA Ian

I'd just recommend to locate one of the more basic models.
That's what I did. no airbags, no ABS, no alarm and remote central locking to annoy you .. etc, etc.
The D1 is then as simple as it gets, so less stuff to go wrong, just when you don't want them too .. etc.

With the timing belt, just be sure that the previous owner knew when it was last done. If you've spannered yourself, the timing belt is very simple to do yourself and save a ton of $'s in the process.
Tappet adjustment is easy to do, just difficult if you have a bad back(to reach the rear most rockers).

Thanks for that, I may have found one, no ABS, no airbags, one owner with a few goodies already fitted. Going to look this weekend, will post pics.

Check the front floor. They can leak, and LR thoughtfully provided a sponge like underlay to keep the water inside, so rust is not uncommon. Usually not hard to fix.

The earlier ones, up to '94, seem to have better window mechanisms.

Whatever you buy, fit a low coolant temp alert of some type.

    Good luck.

Also rust around the opera windows and in the rear floor under the carpet.
Has the filter in the gearbox been changed regularly, so the oil flow doesn't block up?
Cooling system, as it is pressurized and if not correct the coolant may not reach the top of the engine.

supreme executive power is derived by a mandate from the masses, not some farcical aquatic ceremony!

favourite scene of my favourite movie!

.. anyhow back to the D1.
Irrespective of what the owner says, get a service on the trans for peace of mind.

Transfer box is probably leaking, or going to leak the minute you drive it away and so forth.
