Rear bars - steel with swing away tyre/jerry carriers - MCC/ARB/suggestions?

Time for a good rear bar, I'd like something decent to replace the plastic one and I saw the MCC ones that can either have two swing away mounts, interchangeable with tyre or jerry carriers. I'll probably just have one spare tyre on the back and put one on the roof rack and have jerrys on the back bar but anyway, I saw that MCC make one that seems like a premium price but I've read bad things about their quality:

MCC REAR BAR DUAL WHEEL CARRIER SUIT LAND ROVER DISCOVERY I (04/1991-02/1999)

Not sure if these are manufactured here, perhaps not, but what other options are there for something like this? I thought Kaymar used to make one but I'm not sure if they still produce them?

Is one even worth it or should I just stick with the plastic thing and just duct tape a jerry can holder somewhere

Not sure about the MCC bars but if you can find one the Kaymar rear bars, they are excellent. I got one for my D1 and it has been well worth it. I bought mine off this forum and occasionally see D1 & D2 rear bars for sale, so just wait a bit and see what pops up. Good luck!

Haha I'd love to just make my own, not sure how the owners corporation would feel if I started welding in the car park...That and I don't know how to weld, no time like the present to learn though I guess!

Actually found a few custom bar makers (ie people with welders) online who look like they might do a nice job. One called Millweld in Mansfield, then there are some others that looked great too but interstate.

Young Angus, try calling your local TAFE. Bloke I know did a welding course, and his project was a wheel/jerrycans holder for his trailer. Cost was (IIRC) around $300 for the course, plus about $80 for the steel.

Mcc are made in China much like a kaymar copy compared to kaymar they're cheap and you get what pay for. If you know they cheap Chinese made stuff then you can't complain about the quality.

Finding discovery 1 stuff these days is hard. I'll be making my own

Now I like this idea! I'd probably need to make sure it was engineered well enough in some parts though...I guess though it isn't necessarily structural so as long as it is solid and holds up it should do the job.

How much would be involved in designing something like this? I haven't exactly done anything like that before but I'd love to be able to make it myself, then I know it'll be done right!

I think it would be a pretty "Tough" call for anyone without any previous welding or steel fabrication experience to manufacture something as complex as a rear bar/wheel carrier and expect it to fit and function correctly.

You would need much more tooling than a welder and a $300 course to make this.
