Is factory D1 spare wheel carrier strong enough or should I reinforce/replace?

I've decided after some good advice from here to leave the rear bar alone and not add any unnecessary weight to the old girl, no real need for a rear steel bar at this stage, I was wondering how the stock rear door spare wheel carriers hold up over long trips and some rough roads...do they fare well or should I be thinking about reinforcing it or perhaps mounting some kind of swing-away job?

I'm happy to leave it as is and save money/time/sanity but I want it to be sturdy enough to hold up if it gets banged around a bit. It's not holding anything too crazy, just a factory alloy with a 245/75/16 on it.

It is OK, it's fully supported when the door is closed.

I've done heaps of kms with mine on the worst roads

Up to 33's I had no problems.
35's and it showed the strain, very quickly.

I pounded mine on corrugations for quite a few years before going for the spare wheel carrier. I had no problems with the door, it's only because I found it dirt cheap and it came with two jerry can holders. Unless you are going for oversized tyres, I wouldn't worry about it.

I would think that fitting a long range fuel tank would be more cost efficient and would be easier on the suspension that fitting a rear swing out assembly for jerry cans/ spare wheel which normally requires replacing the plastic bumper bar with a steel one as well.
Not only will you save some quids on the install you will save on all the extra weight hanging off the arse end of the truck as well
