I am pretty sure you can service the one you have, Much cheaper that getting another alternator![]()
Gents,
It looks like my Alternator on my '96 Disco Tdi300 might nbe on its way out. Starting to look for another Alternator just in case. I realise there is 2 different size pulleys (61mm & 49mm).
Mine has the 49mm Pulley but was wondering what would happen if I could only source the 61mm pulley version? I know they have different size belts, but what else might be effected?
Maybe the Tacho accuracy??
Rob

Pulleys are swappable, no big deal. It's even possible to swap the old 300TDi mounting plate onto a low mileage V8 alternator, should you happen to trip across one.
should be able to source both. i thought the smaller pulley was the later version. mine was the smaller one and bought if fairly recently (few years) magneti marelli alternator. think thats the OEM one. can always swap pulleys as mentioned. from web search i just did, can source both types.
how do you know it's playing up? not charging battery? or just your tacho jumping?
Nah, on 1st start up u can hear the noise of it. I've removed the main belt and started the engine and it was quiet so it pointed to either the Water Pump; P/S Pump or ALT. When I manually turned them all turned freely except for the ALT Pulley, so from that I'm assuming the bearings are on their way out. Volts & Tacho all good.... for the moment
Is the Alt pully getting hot when running for a bit ?
Pulley size wont make any difference to the Alternator. But it will make a difference to your belt length just enough to be a PITA to tension on a bad day.
Basically any alternator that will fit will do the job, Get one off a Hyundai if you have to,
Apart from basic wear and sometimes the module ( or good old fashioned diodes if they ever go ) they will go forever
Just find one that will fit. Wont matter what it came off
Your local wrecker will have heaps of different makes and models. Just find one you can make fit
Swapping pulleys is easy if you use a rattle gun
I sourced one years ago off a transit van and swapped the pulleys , The only difference was i could not use the heat shield of the OE alt .
If doing this make sure the wire`s are well away from the exhaust / Turbo![]()
