Recommend me a good tool kit / socket set for a D1 300Tdi

I bought these two sets of spanners and they both fit inside the same wrap, Cheap as chips and plenty good enough for breakdown work.

Are they Top of the Wazza whiz bang tools? NO
Would I recommend them for workshop use? NO
Do they come with a lifetime warranty? NO

All I know is that I have used these for the last couple of years on some pretty rusted and obstinate bolts and haven't ruined them yet So Do I think they are value for money? I would have to say a definite YES to that.
So as far as for putting a Touring tool kit together for breakdowns I don't think that spending huge money on first class tools is a great idea, In the Workshop getting the Best is a great idea But for Bush and Paddock work it is a bit of a case of "Overkill"

Holy cow, you lot are absolutely fantastic!!! There is so much amazing info there I'm sure I'll have no problems sorting out the right tool kit for trips and for at home.

Funny you say that ... I brought one home with me one day back in May '16!

Then I got to worrying that a Rover of any type, not leaking .. can only mean one thing .. it probably has no fluids left to leak out .. so I started tinkering(and yep! fluids were all there! :p)
During that tinkering process, as well as already having many tools at my disposal, I started collecting more and some strange stuff I'd never needed pre Tdi ownership(my first).

So while I was relieved that I have this extremely rare leakless Rover, I still worry that one day it'll all gush out in one massive hit .. like near the end of the Blues Brothers movie when the Blues Mobile finally had enough! [tonguewink]

I’ve got a lot of different higher quality brands of tools in workshop varying from the original Minimax & Sidchrome to newer Kingcrome and Snap On. Each is for a job and the price relates to the reliability I’m expecting from the tools.
However to try to answer your original question of a good tool kit for a D1 300 Tdi I’d recommend you have a quick look at a Force brand 142Pc Combination Tool Set (1/2" 3/8" & 1/4" Drive that includes a few other hand tools) Product Code: 41421
Alternatively they have a smaller 82Pc Combination Socket and Spanner Toolkit, Product Code: 4821-5-72.
The Force brand have a life time warranty and I know of a number of Hastings workshops that have stopped using Snap on and Caterpillar (manufactured by Snap On) and now use Force due to cost, lower failure rate and backup service, when needed.
I have the 142 pc kit that live permanently in the back of my disco along with few extras including a laser cut spanner each for the fan hub and the Maxi-drive heavy duty wheel flange. These at designed to fit into the jack handles so I don’t need additional levers.
Coincidentally I have the 82pc kit in a 06 Subaru Outback that my wife normally drives and it has been required far more often than the one in the Disco.

Tensioner had obvious signs of having pooped itself too, and the ratchet broke trying to remove it.

I'm going to pull it apart to see if it's salvageable in any way.

If its a Kincrome ratchet take it back for repair! I have done this with one I found lying around at work the ratchet was buggered so took it to my local auto shop. They sent it in for repair and had it back about 2weeks later good as new. All they asked when I dropped it in for repair was had it been used commercially, answer was of course not. Gotta love life time guarantee. Ratchet was minimum 15 years old.

Yeah, I'll try to get into Scoresby myself tomorrow(should have the time I hope) and get them to 'warranty' it there and then if they can.
I hate the buggerizing around with companies wanting proof of this and idiotic exceptions for that .. etc.

My local Bursons(just walking distance) had two repair kits, but one for the 1/4 drive and one for the 1/2 drive!(of course!! [bighmmm])

So this is the little 1/4" and 3/8" drive set that I've had for years, used to use it a bit to service my old '67 Ford XR wagon and my '98 V8 Disco before I sold them. Probably from about ten years ago and a pretty decent little kit, but I don't know if this was from the good or not so good Sidchrome era but hey, it's alright, the ratchets have the button in the head too! Forgot to mention that I already had this, also have a nice Stanley set of screwdrivers from Bunnings which seems to have a lot of stuff, one of those black cases of screwdrivers.

Then this was a bit of a nice Christmas pressie I just got from my folks, Dad has lots of old Sidchrome stuff from 30 or 40 years ago so he loves them...might have to raid his kits if I need something haha but this seems like a great set to start off. One of my mechanic friends also said I should go up to 23mm with spanners so I might just get a couple of bigger ones to augment this set, maybe double ring enders for those ones but I'll see what they have.

So them (and a set of screwdrivers) are my tools so far, along with an oil filter remover tool somewhere down in the truck and a couple of hammers and some funnels. Sounds like a breaker bar should be next on the list, and maybe a 1/2" drive socket set for the big jobs but I'll see if I can find something on special.
