Some of the AF stuff is pretty close But like adjustable spanners they are great for rounding off nuts/bolts.

Regarding metric tools. I started a fitter and turner apprenticeship in 1957. Aside from metric sockets supplied in socket sets and almost never used, the only metric wrenches I had were bought as needed. I bought sets of metric oe & oe/ring wrenches when I acquired a late model Falcon and an LR County-Isuzu. I have socket sets, 1/4 drive, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4. AF wrenches from tiny to 1 1/2", shifters from 2" to 24". I did work on trucks, ships, heavy plant during my days on the tools. I much preferred being a machinist to a greasy fitter rolling in the dirt fixing broken down plant & trucks or up to my bum in waste oil and bilge water in ship repair. Didn't buy metric tools as we never needed them.

as you work on your car you will collect required tools and makeshift ones too. important one that has been mentioned is the viscous fan spanner. another one which is not vital but helps is the drive shaft flared tool. helps you get at the shaft bolts easier. if you need to remove gearbox or get at clutch for some reason i would get a few extensions with those wobbly joints so that you can get some flex for the top bolts. also, i have a thin socket which i ground down a little bit more at the bolt end to be able to fit a valeo clutch plate. some of the bolts are really close to the housing and you need a very thin socket to fit in. most of that stuff you won't be doing on the side of the road. i take them with me anyway though as they dont take up much room and they fit in my ammo box tool kit. i also have a briefcase type kit from kinchrome with metric and imperial sockets, metric spanner, ratchet etc etc. any other size sockets and spanners are in the ammo box.
I carry quite a lot of tools around with me when I do a trip Simply because as I have removed all the rear seating I have plenty of room and carrying capacity to do so also the rear drawers help with this.
We also usually take two 4WD's so the tool load can be shared between the two vehicles.
I also take a welder and various cordless power tools which surprisingly can get used quite often.
If you are already "Heavy" with camping gear and all the other paraphilia needed for an extended trip then just carrying a Basic tool kit is about all you will be able to fit in I suppose.
As my D2a is nearly 14 years old and my boat and trailer are not much younger I personally feel the need to carry a fairly comprehensive tool kit so that I can cover most breakdowns and some things like the 1/2" drive ratchet gun I carry with me is to simply make things So much easier.
Horses for courses I recon and if you think a particular tool will come in handy on a trip and you can fit it in then Why not do so?
Things like a 40cm auger drill bit in a cordless drill will make banging in pegs in hard ground SO much easier by pre drilling a hole to put the peg in, So some tools are useful beyond fixing the truck and trailer/van.
My go-to tools are..

I also have a couple of sets of ring/open ended spanners - kincrome. Buy a set with the full range of sizes - you don't want to damage stuff using the wrong sized spanner.
Probably the most used kit is this basic 1/2" socket set - the quality seems really good.

And then I use ratchets and breaker bars - whatever I have lying around. I've just got cheap chinese ones, or the cordless impact driver where possible (I'm lazy).
I have one of these kits too - the variety of small driver bits is really useful for a variety of jobs, and the good variety of sizes of allen keys, and the extra sockets/bars/extensions etc I find handy. The sockets are not 6-sided though - so I prefer the impact sockets above. Now discontinued.
