We tow our 19" road star with a Tdi D1. I have air bags under the bum and no WDH. Loaded correctly, I have had no trouble towing ( lack of horsepower excluded )

Gee, I would have thought a D1 would have no trouble towing a 19 inch van, Paul.

I towed a camper trailer with a 300Tdi Disco 1 for years OK, but you have to manually change down the auto on hills.

With its small rear overhang it should tow better than the D2,,
mind you the specs on the D3 show why its a vastly superior tug,,
13(!) inches longer in the wheelbase, and a 2 inch wider track than the D1
