D1 wont start, still parked at shops.:(

Howdy all, Havn't been here for a while. not been driving the disco much for the last couple of years. much cheaper to buy and pay off a new cheap car than drive the disco 200 k's a day. also forgot or had been deleted so set up a new profile.
anyway took the disco 1997 S1 for a drive today and after a few stops here and there without any problems , stopped at the shops and went to start it to go home , it doesn't crank over. opened and close with and without the remote ok locked and unlocked with the key and the remote 20 times. dash lights come on but no cranking.
had to call the wife to rescue the kids and myself. deservitlly got heaps of joking and funny looks from swmbo (as she doesn't, and never has liked the disco). keep telling her i had the car longer than her and its last on, first off.
    HELP, and thanks in advance.
    Paul.
PS doing the search thing as we speak buy its a lot or reading to find the nuggets i need, but will continue

Could be starter motor solenoid sticking. Mine did the other day. Tap the solenoid with something whilst someone turns the key to start.
Also check for 12v at the starter wire trigger wire - its a spade connector on my 97 300Tdi that goes onto the solenoid.

    Thanks Finnus,
went back to the shops with a multi meter and a hammer.
tried to start and away she went like a brand new one without doing a thing.
i think ill put her in the for sale section later as i wont be needing it anymore.
    anyone want a D1?
    Thanks
    Paul

Same symptoms as I had recently see here....300 tdi intermittently wont start

For me it was simply the terminals on the solenoid needed cleaning - but the thread covers a few other possible causes.

Look fwd to seeing your D1 in the markets.

Immobiliser spider solder joints. Classic problem. Joints crack, heating expands them, when they cool, they work. Fixed it twice in mine then third time, bypassed it. No problems since. Be prepared for the dash to fall to bits as you dive to get to the spider which is buried deep under the radio.

Now that sounds like a good bit of preventative maintenance to get stuck into before waiting for it to fail at an inconvenient time...is it only some that have a problem or is this one of those Land Rover things that inevitably fail on just about all of them? I've heard of this issue a lot in the past but never experienced it myself...

It seems fairly inevitable. I would wait until it happens, as you're normally back on the road in 20 minutes. Just bypass instead of soldering, since resoldered joints just re-crack.
