Will a bonnet scoop reduce heat in the engine bay?

    Hi all,

I've got the disco running pretty sweet these days, engine was done back in 08 and a new head was fitted late in 2016. I've had the radiator rodded and had a new aluminium cowel made up that bolts onto the top of the fan shroud to replace the brittle plastic one. The viscous fan coupling is new and overall it runs pretty cool, there are a few decent hills around here that see the temp increase on the digital gauge, nothing to alarming.

I've ordered a new hard top camper which wont be here for a while so i want to look at ways to keep it cooler.

So, my question is, would fitting a bonnet scoop help drive cooler air in and force the hotter are out or does it do buggar all?

    Matt

    Hi Ace

My thoughts have always been towards a reverse scoop, maybe a Subi GT facing the windscreen, maybe some Ford GT oyster vents,,
rainfall ingress is my concern,, maybe not so much yours---

something like this I can manage the influx of water with a small lip,, and theres no direct downwards opening,,

Mine reverse facing, no idea if it works or not. Only installed it for intercooler clearance.

    Hi Pedro,

I did wonder about rearward facing also, i guess air flows out and up over the car as opposed to cold air being forced in like a forward facing one.

I guess the only way to know is to try both and see the effect on temp.

The base of the windscreen is a high pressure area, this is why the old A9X reverse facing bonnet scoop worked so well for the Webers used on the race cars.

If you want to exhaust radiator air one point to utilise is just behind and above the radiator on the bonnet, think of where the radiator exhaust ducts are on a Mitsubishi Evo, this utilises laminar flow to extract the air from the rad, or another spot is side ducts in the guards behind the wheels. A few of the Defender boys have done this and it works.

Matt the scoop if from a VE commodore, but i had to mod it to follow the curve of the bonnet at the front. Not sure if i have any pics from inside, but i do know i can't see into the engine bay.

    Hi mate,

No worries, its quite a low profile one, looks tidy. I guess i need to look around to see which one i like and then work out if it fits or not. The D1 bonnet is a large flat area behind the front lip so i cant imagine mounting one would be to hard.

How big is the hole in the bonnet under the scoop?
