Start up STALL - every time

    Hi all,

Got a second hand, well used D1 with 3.9L V8i.
I am experiencing some issues with starting, while not major now I just don't want them to develop and would like to know where to start for fault finding.

    The issue:
Every time I start the car, if I don't hold idle with the accelerator for at lease 20 seconds, it will stall. most times when driving its fine and sitting stationery in gear it usually idles around 600. Sometimes if I'm in a rush to get going once started ( hold idle on startup for 10seconds) the revs remain iffy for the entire journey, might stall at slow speeds or when sitting at traffic lights. then I have to restart the car and make sure I'm holding the revs long enough for it to settle.

any ideas on this one? has someone experienced this before? It would appear as though this engine is known for these issues but if its a simple fix then I will be all over it.

    Cheers,

    S

My D2 v8 did the same thing.

Main thing that fixed my issue was cleaning the MAF with MAF cleaner spray, and then attacking the filthy insides of the butterfly and inlet tract with the same stuff(didn't have any carby cleaner spray, but MAF spray seems to do the same thing).
The inlet was all carboned up, and while the major factor in getting it to idle from start when cold was the MAF, the cleaning up of the inlet manifold helped.

Hard starting and cutting out are probably two different problems. Bad idle and cutting out is usually related to the stepper motor / idle air valve. Take it out and clean it to start with.

    x2

plus not sure what other D1's idle at but mine likes to be closer to 800, I do have a Tornado chip though. Any less and when the aircon kicked in it would stall.

A normal D1 will start and run at 1500 rpm straight away then drop down because the idle stepper motor is fully opened within 2 seconds after shut down. Therefore in your case the stepper is probably stuck solid. Base idle can be adjusted with a 3/16" hex key in the small recess on top of the throttle body, although if your stepper is stuck this will mean a high idle when it's hot.
