Hi James.
I have spare pulleys here if you want to try replacing them to eliminate the noise.
I am in crestmead 4132.
Pm if interested.
Cheers,
Tony
After the process of elimination I've narrowed down the noise under the TDI D1 bonnet to be in the A/C belt area. Can't see any belt misalignment and have replaced the adjuster, jockey and a/c compressor bearings. All pulleys are clean. The pitch of the noise changes when the a/c clutch is engaged. After about 30 minutes of driving the noise decreases, but not totally. Have tried loosening the belt but no difference. Belt is about 2 years old.
Appreciate any suggestions as to the cause.
thanks

98% of all Land Rovers built are still on the road.
The other 2% made it home.
Cost difference between Britpart and Genuine seals: £2.04. Knowing that your brakes won't fail at any moment: Priceless.
That particular belt is pretty cheap.
Even considering it's only 2 yo, may be a good idea to change it with a good quality one.
I had a screeching belt noise for a while on my 300 Tdi. brand new belt, and belt screeching. I refused to believe a brand new belt would screech the way this one did, so thinking it was bearings and all that jazz, I wasted a bit of $s on new pulley bearings, and even a new waterpump pulley.
All came to naught. No difference. close to new tensioner was then purchased, again no result.
Bought another new belt .. screech gone!
Strangely tho, the next issue that cropped up was that a week or so later, engine started to develop a knock at idle, but not with even a small rise in revs(eg. from 650-700 @ idle, to say 800-900RPM) ..
traced a lot of stuff, but in the end it tuned out to be a dud brand new tensioner knocking. Bearmach brand too(which are supposedly not a bad brand to look out for). Anyhow, new belt on .. no screching, old new belt straight into the bin!!
Old tensioner back on .. no knocking, no screeching .. almost blissful(but as it's a Tdi, it's only 'Tdi bliss').
I vaguely remember that my new AC belt only cost about $10 or so ... so before you spend too much on stuff that may not help try the cheap options too.
Also, spray some water onto it whilst the engine is running too. Best to remove the fan first, otherwise you cop a gob full of spray too! It may not stop the noise, but it should at least change it.
One thing I stupidly did too when tracign my main belt noise was try some of that horrid belt grip spray! .. AHHH! It sprayed muck all over the engine bay in a neat line parallel with the running of the belt.
It definitely stopped the screeching belt, but only for a short while, then it started again.
Do you have any oil leaks, new or old?
Reason why is that if any oil is penetrating onto and into the belts rubber, it could cause it to screech/whistle/chirp.

I had a similar experience with my 300Tdi. I would swap the belt out as suggested.
I had a strange squeak with my main accessory belt.
After fiddling about and even replacing the tensioner it turns out it was just the belt... The belt wasn't stretched and looked fine but just started squealing.
There was a pulley upgrade on the 300Tdi, but surely that would have been done a long time ago.
Could the belt be running slightly off centre and causing the noise?
