    CEM oil flush results:

Hey folks, I know another member has a thread going on using the Cost Effective Maintenance products.
Here's going to be my log of results.

First up, I was having heating up issues on my Tdi(98 Auto).
Runs fine almost all the time, except when I ran the A/C on a hot day and had the underpowered Tdi loaded up(eg. up a long incline of more than 5mins. Less than 5min loading it'd heat up to waht I thought would be acceptable .. say high 90's low 100's °C.
But past 5mins, it's rocket up quickly past 100°C and in some instances reached past 115°C.
Long term those temps aren't ideal for longevity(me thinks).
Anyhow, so I started with the coolant flush stuff they sell. I believe it worked pretty much as they advertised it too. It cleaned out some gunk that the two flushes I tried using the garden hose 'missed' months earlier.

So I tried their oil flush.
My 300Tdi would darken it's oil basically after a couple of weeks running(about 500Klms) or so.
Used the oil flush a few months back(near on 10K klms now) and it seemed to help keep the fresh oil clean till about 3K kms mark.
Just didn't bother too(actually forgot too) keep track of it in writing and with pics.

    So yesterday I did it's 10K oil/filter change:

    Pic 1:
    20180825_142434_10K old oil.jpg
10K old oil, farily standard looking very solid black consistency. advantage is that it's easy to see the recommended level.
An amount of flush additive was added to the old oil idled for a bit to help 'flush it' as they instruct.

    Pic 2:
    20180825_142333_30min new oil_flush.jpg
30min new oil as per their instructions added an amount of flush then left to a high idle(1K RPM) for 30 mins or so) .. I may have skimped on some minutes, or I may have gone above and beyond .. can't remember but close to 30mins.
this new oil was drained again, stinking hot oil, easy to drain with the quick drain system(I have the Femco version) . Drains directly into a 10Lt drum.
As can be seen, it's quite black, has a very light translucence to it, and this is what I'd see after about 500km running without the flush.

    Pic 3:
    20180825_142151_new oil.jpg
1hr driving with the new oil now.
in real life it looks even cleaner than how it shows up in the pics(something to do with the light maybe).
Major disadvantage is that it's nigh on impossible to see the oil level

Will post updates if there are any changes to the oil colour at various intervals in the future.

From now on tho I won't be doing a new oil flush before the proper new oil is then used.
I've now run out of the cheapo oil I've had sitting for a while. So will just add a bit of flush to the old oil before draining from here on.

I've tried oil flush stuff products previously as I reckon many may have also tried. I think I even still have some from all those years ago.
None have really worked beyond what a normal oil change would have done anyhow, but so far I reckon these guys stuff does what they say it does.
If not 100%, then at least 80-90% as they claim.

Next product I'm going to give a shot is their decarboniser and FTC stuff.

    Hope this info helps.
    Arthur.

Had similar results in a 80 series cruiser with 1HDT at 450,000km , new filter & oil would stay clean for a good 5000km , before that it was the usual black after a 5 min drive subsequent to a filter and oil change.

The engine finally blew up at 540,000 km but still running clean.

Interestingly my (new in 2013) Iveco Daily 4x4 oil went black after 50km , and being new wasn't about needing flushing. I removed and blanked off the EGR at about 30,000km and now the oil stays a nice honey brown till 10,000 km . ( I change oil at 15k , not the recommended 40k) .

Just saying if you have an EGR still operational don't expect the oil to stay clean.

No EGR on the 300 Tdi. If it had one, it wasn't there when I got it.

I am thinking tho that possible crankcase fumes getting past the inadequate filter LR fitted, so maybe a Provent type may be in order one day as well.

The other problem with the 300Tdi is that something like 600ml of oil is left behind after every change.
The drain is quite a bit higher than the bottom of the sump, and whatever is in the oil cooler circuit mostly doesn't get drained.
I actually measured what was left behind once but can't recall exactly how much now.

    ...
Yeah, I noted that more was left in the sump than I'm used too.
So I started using the ramps when doing oil, lift the front higher to get more angle.

Obviously nothing can be done about the oil cooler without a lot of mucking about.
I assumed that most of it would drain, once the oil filter was removed due to it being higher and the lower pipe running down to the oil pump housing without much of a 'belly' for the oil to settle.
I may have seen it wrong tho.

I've always had the habit of flushing a good litre of fresh oil through before putting the sump plug back in, hoping the colder, denser oil will lift the hotter, old oil out.

Whether that works in practice I have no idea, but it makes me feel better. CEM oil flush results:

    There's an idea!

... and you were right about the oil cooler too. I remembered it wrong.
The pipe does a downward bend to the oil pump housing, but it does rise up(over the steering box) from the bottom outlet first. So I reckon at least 4" of oil in the cooler remains.
